La La La Song

We met these French fans (with CRAZY hair) on the bus in Whistler. They were on the way to the Whistler Nordic Centre, and decided to sing this song for us. Merci!

21st Century Learning

Martin J. Gottlieb School

Thanks to Silvia Tolisano and her second grade class at 21st Century Learning in Jacksonville, Florida, for following the 2010 Fun and Games Blog!

Her students are emphasizing and integrating skills such as collaboration and communication across all subject areas. Students are experiencing real connections with eye witnesses, experts and peers from around the world. Global awareness and collaboration is an integral part of 21st Century curriculum. Tools, such as video conferencing, blogs, wikis and podcasts allow teachers and students to immerse themselves in new literacies (in addition to basic literacy) such as information, networking, digital citizenship, intercultural and media literacy.

Our elementary school students are experiencing the 2010 Vancouver Olympics in all new ways. In addition to viewing events on a television, they are working collaboratively with another elementary school class from Port Hardy, Canada. Through a wiki, they are contributing information about athletes, their countries, and winter sports. They have interviewed one of the Torch Runners from Port Hardy via Skype. As a culminating project, a combined sportscast/podcast is planned. Students, from both schools, will also compete against each other in various sports events on a Wii and compare results with each other.

Thanks, and keep on connecting!

Olympic DJ!

24 Feb

Many of the athletes at the games are saying that music plays a BIG part in motivating them to train and compete. Music is energizing, so we thought we’d see what we could learn at a DJ school!

Blog Update

22 Feb

Hi Everyone,

We just wanted to give you an update on the blog, as we were hoping to have added new things as planned from the Olympics in Vancouver. We had arrived in BC on Wednesday as planned, but sadly a family situation occurred and we had to return to Toronto on Saturday. We are glad that you have been following the blog, and would encourage everyone to continue to follow as there WILL be new things added, including updates and more fun stuff!

As we were driving back to Vancouver from Whistler on Saturday, we took some photos of the beautiful drive, and they can be viewed here. But this one is our favourite. It is at Queen Elizabeth Park, where they have some of the most beautiful gardens! Our Grandma loved gardening, and we think this garden was beautiful, just like her!

We're Here!

18 Feb

Yes, we are now in the Olympic host city of Vancouver! We even have a very sunny day, and a lot of activities planned.

We will be visiting the 2010 Aboriginal Pavilon, where they are celebrating International Indigenous Day. It should be a great opportunity to learn more about the co-host of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, the Four Host First Nations. We’ll also be visiting some other sites around the city, so look for some pictures on the mobile blog here. Then we’re off to Whistler for the weekend!

Here we are in Vancouver with our friend Janel, who we are staying with (her parents too) in Vancouver and Whistler!

Destination: Cotdale

We are glad that Dale Cotnam, a talented Toronto comic, animator is married with three sons. Two of his sons, Quin and Kyle, attend Gledhill Junior Public School. He blends his time working as an optician, doing stand up comedy and presenting workshops on humour and stress reduction around the Toronto area.

First Medal on Day 2- Day 3 Ahead!

14 Feb

Just a reminder that we will be arriving at the Olympics in just three days, and are very excited! For now, we continue to follow all the action from here at home…

Jennifer Heil became the first athlete to medal for Canada with a silver in women’s moguls, and congratulations Jenn! She “gave it her all” in the final run, putting her in first place with one skier to go. But, American Hannah Kearney had the run of her life too, and won the gold medal. Chloe Dufour-Lapointe of Montreal finished fifth, an amazing result for her first Olympics!

Athletes to Watch: February 14th

Jessica Dubé and Bryce Davison – Pairs Figure Skating Short Program

Canada Pairs

Though they’ve experienced more than their fair share of setbacks, Jessica Dubé & Bryce Davison have emerged as two of Canada’s biggest podium threats! The duo have battled language barriers, break-ups, and injuries (including a scary incident where Dubé was slashed by Davison’s skate) but are stronger than ever in their bid for Olympic Gold! Com”pair”isons have been made to Jamie Salé and David Pelletier – not bad considering those two brought home the Gold for Canada in 2002!

Happy Valentine’s Day Canada!

Canada’s First Gold?

13 Feb

Jenn Heil

Canadian Jennifer Heil is defending Olympic Champion in the women’s freestyle moguls, and today she will try to become the first Canadian to win a gold medal on home soil. She said today: “I don’t feel the pressure like I did in Turin, Italy”. She is focused on what she has to do, and her coaches said that during a practice run today she had “a steely look in her eyes”. We will be cheering for you Jenn!
